In November 1998 Doherty Hungary made and sold its first spindles.
Jim Doherty joined W H Doherty & Co. in 1994 and was given two years to get his feet under the table before embarking on a cost cutting programme to maintain profitability in response to the exchange rate pressures. After the first manufacturing cells had been operating in Hungary for 12 months it became clear that the future of the manufacturing was in Hungary and not in England. Within another 12 months all of W H Doherty's manufacturing had been transferred to Hungary and the 66 year old business was closed.
Doherty Hungary now operates out of a newly built 25,000 sq ft factory, is ISO TS 16949 approved, employs 100 persons on a 3 shift, 24 hrs per day, 7 days a week basis. It has established the first apprentice scheme in Orosháza and has a full program of investment to meet the many demands made for its special products.
